The Korean Youth Honor Society (KYHS) is excited to announce the 2025 Music Competition. This competition aims to discover and nurture talented Korean youths who will thrive on the global music stage, fostering their musical abilities while helping them achieve their dreams as musicians. We look forward to the participation of many young students.
Dates & Locations:
New York: June 7, 2025, 2:00-5:00 p.m. - Mikowsky Hall, Manhattan School of Music (130 Claremont Avenue, New York, NY 10027)
Seoul: August 23, 2025, 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. - Rode Arts Center (79 Nambu Sunhwanro 317 Gil, Seocho-Gu, Seoul)
Washington D.C.: September 20, 2025, 3:00-6:00 p.m. - Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum (201 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314)
Online: Video submissions by September 22, 2025
Winners' Concert: December 6, 2025 - Carnegie Hall, New York
Instrument Categories:
New York and Washington D.C. competitions: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, and Chamber Music
Seoul competition: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, and Chamber Music
Online competition (common to all regions): Voice, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Piccolo, Saxophone, Trumpet, Tuba, Horn, Marimba, Timpani, Harp, Guitar, and Chamber Music
Performance Piece: One free-choice piece.
Eligibility:
Elementary, middle, and high school students or youth of the same age group with Korean heritage (At least one parent or grandparent must be Korean)
Chamber groups are welcome as long as at least one member has Korean heritage.

All members of chamber music ensembles must register individually.
Registration is confirmed upon submission of the application form and payment of the entry fee.

Washington D.C.: September 10, 2025, 11:59 PM (Eastern Time, US)
Online Video Submissions:
Residents of North and South America, and Europe: September 22, 2025, by 11:59 PM (New York Time)
Residents of Asia, Oceania, and Africa: September 22, 2025 (Seoul Time)
Entry Fee:
*Online competition participants are advised to verify their region of residence before paying the participation fee.
New York, Washington D.C. Competition / Online Competition (Residents of North and South America, Europe):
USD 150 for solo, and USD 60 per person for Chamber Music.
After the deadline: USD 180 for solo, and USD 80 per person for chamber music, additional registration possible if circumstances permit.

Seoul Competition / Online Competition (Residents of Asia, Oceania, Africa): 150,000 KRW (80,000 KRW for each chamber music participant). If registered after the deadline: 180,000 KRW (100,000 KRW for each chamber music participant, additional registration possible if circumstances permit).

Benefits
Winners: Winners’ Recital at Carnegie Hall on December 6, 2025
Participants: Optional participation in the ‘World Premiere Series’, collaborating with composers to premiere brand-new works (details will be shared with applicants)
Grade Groups to Each Instrument: The Korean middle and high school curriculum corresponds to grades 7 through 12 in the United States. For students from other countries, the 12-grade system is used to determine the closest equivalent grade. It is the same in the case of homeschooling.
Group 1 (Grades 1, 2, 3)
Group 2 (Grades 4, 5, 6)
Group 3 (Grades 7, 8, 9)
Group 4 (Grades 10, 11, 12)
*Chamber Music (If composed of different grades, the group is determined by the majority grade)
Notes:
Participants will receive information about their performance times and other details via email a week before the competition. Online participants will receive information after the registration deadline, including the results announcement date.
All performance pieces must be played from memory (except for chamber music), and any repeated sections in the original compositions should be performed without repetition. Judges may interrupt the performance. Changes to the performance piece are only allowed during the registration period.
Participants requiring an accompanist must bring their accompanist.
If a final round is deemed necessary on the competition day, finalists will be announced, and the final round will be conducted.
No changes to the application form or entry fee refunds will be allowed after the registration deadline.
Winners participating in the winners’ concert will be responsible for additional costs related to the concert.
Online participants must submit videos recorded between June 22, 2025, and September 22, 2025. Audio-only submissions are not permitted. Video files must be of the applicant's performance without edits or effects. Ensure good video and audio quality for evaluation purposes. Participants will not be penalized for video quality, but it must be clear enough to adequately see and hear the performance.
The video must be recorded horizontally and show the student’s full height, from head to toe, and remain stationary. Piano contestants must set the camera on the right side. Name your video recording with the student's name, grade, and the title of the music. For example, "Mark Lee-9th-Chopin-Concerto-No1.” There are no time restrictions on recording length. Absolutely no audio or video editing or manipulation of any kind is permitted, including splicing, cutting, or sound enhancements. The audio and video source should be the same (i.e., the microphone should not be separate from the camera). Submission videos should be posted to YouTube. Please make sure your video’s privacy setting is set to unlisted. If it is set as private, we cannot see it. Do not set it to public. Provide the link to the video in the Application Form.
