Since last April, Korean Youth Honor Society (KYHS) members have had the opportunity to serve at the Kyonam Somang Eui Geeb (교남소망의 집), a group home dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disorders. This experience has been a reminder of the importance of small acts of service and the value of staying connected amid an increasingly desensitized world.
In an era where fast-paced routines and overwhelming news cycles constantly surround us, it is easy to feel indifferent to the struggles of others. Compassion fatigue is a growing phenomenon, and often, we forget the significance of human connection and presence. Volunteering at Kyonam helped many of us escape the everyday numbness and rediscover the fundamentals of being fully present in the moment.
First and third Wednesday of the month, our members participate in various works such as cleaning and kitchen tasks, primarily assisting the kitchen staff by washing dishes and offering any support possible. While these tasks may seem simple on the surface, they give members the chance to contribute to the community practically and genuinely. Many of us also had the time to speak with the residents, exchange smiles, and converse with the staff.
One of the most powerful aspects of the visit was a realization that volunteering is not about grand gestures. It is about showing up with a willing spirit, being fully present, and offering help. Whether serving food or scrubbing silverware, we are learning more about what it means to serve with purpose and listening to the stories of others who have vastly different experiences from our own. Personally, this visit highlighted the beauty of slowing down and being involved. While I may not have much to offer in terms of expertise or experience, I recognize that being fully engaged in the moment is something that I, and all members, can contribute.
We extend our sincerest thank you to the staff at the Kyonam, who warmly welcome and allow us to contribute to their daily mission. We are also incredibly grateful to Mr. Kim, our KYHS Director, for making this opportunity possible. His constant support, coordination, and encouragement ensure we go beyond serving our immediate surroundings and become more aware of our community.
To KYHS members who have yet to join these volunteering opportunities, I strongly encourage you to participate this month. While it may seem like just an hour of your day, it will shape how you approach the rest of your week.
As a community of young leaders, I hope we can continue cultivating a spirit of service grounded in sincerity and compassion.
